We had a Lithuanian colonel on my NDC course in Rome in 1995 – great big, happy-go-lucky guy. He had been an NCO in the Soviet armed forces fighting rebels in Afghanistan in 1990, before they left with their tail between their legs…. and look how the Yanks failed to learn from history. What a strange world we live in!
